We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Dr. John P. Mulhall, for his tireless efforts and significant contributions to advancing the journal during his tenure.

Dr. Trost's Vision for the Future of JSM:

Dr. Trost brings with him a visionary approach to further elevate JSM's impact and outreach. His vision includes initiatives to enhance the journal's impact factor through innovative article series, such as epidemiology papers, "How I Do It" technique showcases, and sections on innovations, complications, and rare sexual medicine findings, among others. Additionally, he aims to improve outreach efforts, foster diversity, equity, and inclusion, and refine the reviewer selection process. Dr. Trost also proposes strategic considerations for the future of open access and financial sustainability, including further expanding JSM’s reach into social media.  Other key initiatives will include simplifying the submission process, consolidating invitations sent to ISSM members for reviews (avoiding duplications and overtaxing individual contributors), clarifying key factors needed to achieve an acceptance in the journal, enhancing services provided by the journal including pre-submission draft reviews and writing services, among others.  By implementing these strategic initiatives, Dr Trost is committed to ensuring that JSM remains at the forefront of sexual medicine research and education.

The Journal of Sexual Medicine publishes multidisciplinary basic science and clinical research to define and understand the scientific basis of male, female, and couples sexual function and dysfunction. As an official journal of the International Society for Sexual Medicine and the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health, it provides healthcare professionals in sexual medicine with essential educational content and promotes the exchange of scientific information generated from experimental and clinical research.

Counseling Sessions May Improve Sexual Well-Being of Women With Permanent Intestinal Ostomy

Counseling Sessions May Improve Sexual Well-Being of Women With Permanent Intestinal Ostomy

A permanent intestinal ostomy is a surgical procedure for which a small opening is made in the abdomen to redirect waste from the intestines out of the body, usually into a pouch worn outside the body. It is typically done when the lower part of the intestines or rectum is removed or not functional, helping people with conditions like colorectal cancer, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis to manage their bowel movements. It is a lifelong solution, and although it may take some adjustment, it can greatly improve the quality of life for those who need it.

What Is Lysis of Clitoral Adhesions?

The clitoris, a crucial organ in the female reproductive system, has over 10,000 nerve endings and plays a pivotal role in sexual pleasure and sensations. However, various conditions can affect its proper function, including the formation of adhesions. Clitoral adhesions occur when the clitoral hood (the protective fold of skin that covers the glans clitoris) adheres to the glans clitoris, impeding the movement of the hood and causing discomfort. To address this issue, medical professionals often recommend a procedure known as lysis of clitoral adhesions.
