Purpose
The History Committee will preserve the history of ISSM from its inception to the current time and build a repository of that history that will be available to the members of the society and its affiliated societies and the general public.
Responsible for:
The members of the committee will review historical topics and develop ways to store this history repository including articles, photographs, and documents. This history shall be regarding the society itself, the International Society for Sexual Medicine, its previous historical international societies since its inception in 1978 , pertinent history of affiliated societies as it relates to the ISSM, interactive events and symposia with other sexual medicine organizations, and significant events in the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders in women and men. The committee will encourage members of the history committee and other members to prepare articles regarding the history of sexual medicine. It will plan methods of permanent storage in files at our business office and on the ISSM website, so that access to this history will be available for all interested in such historical data.

Over the years, the ISSM History Committee has developed a series of insightful publications that highlight the evolution of sexual medicine and the pioneers who shaped the field. These manuscripts offer valuable perspectives, combining scientific milestones with historical context.

Current chair of the History Committee of the society, having served as historian for the society in the past. Retired Emeritus Professor of Surgery (Urology) at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Retired urologist who practiced at Tulane University (11 years), Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN (7 years), and Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. (24 years- Chief of section of Urology 1994- 2011). M.D. degree from Tulane University, New Orleans, LA - 1968.

Carolyn Earle
Australia
Carolyn Earle is a Sexologist with a special interest in erectile dysfunction. She has been a member of ISSM since 1983 and has served on a number of committees as well as being the Asia-Pacific Representative on the ISSM Board. She was deputy chair of the World meeting in Perth, Australia in 2000 and chair of the APSSM meeting in Cairns, Australia in 2005. She has published extensively and although now semi-retired she maintains a keen interest in sexual medicine.

Irwin Goldstein, MD is Director of Sexual Medicine, Alvarado Hospital and Owner and Director of the San Diego Sexual Medicine
Dr. Goldstein has been involved with sexual dysfunction research since the late 1970's. Authoring more than 350 publications, multiple book chapters and editing 6 textbooks.
He is Editor- in- Chief of Sexual Medicine Reviews and past Editor of The Journal of Sexual Medicine. He is a Past President of ISSWSH and SMSNA. He graduated from Brown University in engineering and received his MDCM from McGill University.

He completed his PhD in Medicine from the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (1991). He is currently: Pro-Rector of Postgraduate Studies, Research and Innovation and Full Professor of Urology at the FMABC University Center, Director, member of the clinical staff and urologist at the H Ellis Institute; Editor-Emeritus of the International Brazilian Journal of Urology and Einstein (São Paulo). He was President of the International Society of Sexual Medicine (2000-2002), President of the Brazilian Society of Urology (2006-2007) and President of the Latin American Society of Sexual Medicine (2011-2015). Founder and President of the Brazilian Association for the Study of Impotence (1989-1991). He is a Full Member of the São Paulo Academy of Medicine (10/30/2024) of chair no. 126,

Wayne Hellstrom

Dr. Wayne J.G. Hellstrom is a Professor of Urology and the Chief of Andrology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the past President of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, the American Society of Andrology, and the International Society of Sexual Medicine. Dr. Hellstrom has authored or co-authored over 100 book chapters and more than 560 peer-reviewed journal articles. He received his M.D. from McGill University in Montreal, where he also completed a residency in general surgery. He then went on to complete a urology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by an AUA scholar-funded fellowship in andrology at the University of California, Davis.

Michael Perelman

Dr. Michael A. Perelman is a Clinical Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and former Clinical Professor of Reproductive Medicine and Urology at Weill Cornell Medicine in NYC. He has directed its Human Sexuality Program for over 30 years.
In 2011, he founded the MAP Education and Research Foundation, a 501(c) (3) public charity that emphasizes a biomedical-psychosocial and cultural approach to the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders, using its Sexual Tipping Point® Model. The Foundation grants STP Awards for the best abstracts/presentations delivered at sexual health care professional meetings.
The American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) certifies him as a sex therapy diplomate, supervisor, sex educator, sex counselor, and CE provider and honored him with their 2012 Award for Professional Standard of Excellence and their 2019 Integrative Sex Therapy Award. In 2021, the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health’s Program in Human Sexuality selected him as a “Distinguished Sexual and Gender Health Revolutionary.” In 2022, the SMSNA presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the combined Sexual Medicine Society of North America/International Society for Sexual Medicine (SMSNA/ISSM).
He has hundreds of publications, including his co-edited Management Of Sexual Dysfunction In Men And Women: An Integrated Approach, published in 2016. From 2012-2017, Dr. Perelman served as the Editor in Chief for Springer’s Current Sexual Health Reports and is now its Emeritus Editor in Chief. He still serves on several publications’ Boards of Directors and as a consulting editor or reviewer.
