ISSM Webinar - Beyond Pleasure: Exploring Orgasmic Dysfunction in Men and Women

The webinar will take place on Monday, June 16, 2025 at 1.00PM UTC. To see what time that is for you, click here.
This webinar explores two understudied conditions: Orgasmic Anhedonia, where individuals experience orgasm without pleasure, and Post-Orgasmic Illness Syndrome (POIS), characterized by debilitating symptoms following orgasm. Both pose significant challenges for clinicians and researchers in sexual medicine, as they can profoundly impact quality of life and relationship satisfaction.
Experts Irwin Goldstein and Jim Pfaus will examine the neurobiological and physiological substrates of orgasmic dysfunction. The presentations will provide an in-depth discussion of the clinical manifestations, diagnostic challenges, and potential therapeutic approaches, highlighting the latest scientific findings and future research directions. By exploring the complexities of Orgasmic Anhedonia and POIS in both men and women, this webinar aims to advance our understanding of these conditions and promote the development of effective treatments.

Dr. Goldstein has been involved with sexual dysfunction research since the late 1970's. He has authored about 350 peer reviewed publications and multiple chapters, and edited 6 textbooks in the field. His interests include penile microvascular bypass surgery, surgery for dyspareunia, sexual health management post cancer treatment, genital dysesthesia/persistent genital arousal disorder, physiologic investigation of sexual function in men and women, and diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction in men and women. Dr. Goldstein is Director of Sexual Medicine at Alvarado Hospital, Clinical Professor of Surgery at University of California, San Diego and practices medicine at San Diego Sexual Medicine. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Sexual Medicine Reviews and past Editor of The Journal of Sexual Medicine. He is a Past President of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health and the Sexual Medicine Society of North America. He holds a degree in engineering from Brown University and received his medical degree from McGill University. The World Association for Sexual Health awarded the Gold Medal to Dr. Goldstein in 2009 in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the field, in 2012 he received the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health Award for Distinguished Service in Women’s Sexual Health, in 2013 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, and in 2014 he received the ISSM Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Sexual Medicine. He is happily married to his college sweetheart Sue, and together they have three children and five grandchildren.

Dr. James Pfaus is a basic preclinical researcher in behavioral neuroscience and neuroendocrinology with a focus on the neurobiology, neurochemistry, and molecular biology of sexual behavior. His research examines how the brain’s neurochemical and neuroanatomical systems are organized for sexual arousal, desire, pleasure, and inhibition. He is also interested in the role played by stimuli associated with sexual reward in priming sexual responses, and his research has revealed a strong epigenetic effect of experience with sexual pleasure on the crystallization of sexual attraction, preference, and performance. His laboratory has also played a major role in the preclinical development of drugs to treat sexual arousal and desire disorders. Research from his lab has been reported worldwide in the popular media and he has been interviewed for Time, Newsweek, Playboy, Scientific American, The Scientist, CBC, BBC, and ABC’s Nightline, and featured on the Discovery Channel’s Sex Files, Daily Planet, and The Nature of Things, along with several documentaries, including the joint HBO-BBC documentary “Middle Sex”.
