Vibrators are small electrical devices designed to enhance sexual pleasure. As the name suggests, they vibrate at different speeds to stimulate the genitals or other parts of the body.
Both men and women can use vibrators. In fact, vibrator use is actually quite common. A 2009 Journal of Sexual Medicine study reported that 53% of women and 45% of men had used vibrators.
The devices can be used alone during masturbation or with a partner during foreplay, massage and even intercourse.

Used properly, vibrators can have a number of benefits.
A person may use a vibrator during masturbation to explore his or her own body, making discoveries about what is sexually arousing
Vibrators (and other sex toys) can give couples an opportunity to vary their sexual practices. Some worry that they will eventually need to rely on the vibrator for sexual pleasure, but this usually isn’t the case. The vibrator is just an add-one, and not a replacement for true intimacy and partner bonding.

Other benefits include:
- Increased sexual arousal
- Easier and quicker orgasms
- Better vaginal lubrication for women
- Improved erections for men

Vibrators can be purchased online, in sex shops, and in some department stores or pharmacies.
Choosing one can be challenging, however. Vibrators come in many shapes and sizes. Some are penis-shaped and intended for vaginal or anal stimulation. Others are egg- or “magic wand”-shaped and intended for clitoral and external genital stimulation Some are worn over the fingertip. Others are strapped on or pressed against the genitals.

It’s a good idea to take one’s time when shopping for a vibrator. Consider these questions:
- How it will be used? For massage? Genital stimulation? Alone? With a partner?
- Where will it be used?
- Does it need batteries or is there an electrical plug?
- What material is it made of?
- Does it have more than one speed?
- What is the appropriate size?
Size is an important factor. Using a vibrator (or any sex toy) that is too large can lead to injury.
Couples may want to shop together. Consumers are encouraged to ask lots of questions and read reviews, especially if they are purchasing their first vibrator. Some decide to get more than one for variety.
Users should also follow special hygiene recommendations and avoid silicone-based products while using sex toys.
