The International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM) has launched a new journal called Sexual Medicine, published by Wiley-Blackwell.
The publication’s focus is “multidisciplinary clinical, basic, and epidemiological research to define and understand the basis of sexual function and dysfunction in diverse populations,” according to the ISSM website. Sexual Medicine also “acts as a venue for topics of regional or sub-specialty interest.”
The editorial board, led by Dr. Alan W. Shindel of the Urology Department at the University of California Davis, accepts manuscripts on the following topics:
• basic anatomy and physiology pertaining to human sexuality
• pharmacology
• clinical management of sexual dysfunction
• epidemiological studies in sexuality
• psychosexual and interpersonal dimensions of human sexuality
• clinical trials
Sexual Medicine targets healthcare professionals worldwide who study and treat sexual health issues. This audience includes biologists, endocrinologists, family practitioners, gynecologists, internists, neurologists, physiologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, public health practitioners, sex therapists, urologists and other clinical practitioners.
The new journal’s focus on specific populations sets it apart from the ISSM’s other publication, The Journal of Sexual Medicine, which concentrates on general interest topics for sexual medicine practitioners.
Sexual Medicine is an open access journal. All articles will be available to the public free of charge. To cover publication costs, authors will pay a publication fee of $2,500 / £1,575 / €1,827. However, authors whose papers are industry sponsored or industry supported will be charged $5,000 / £3,150 / €3,654.
For a special introductory period, all active ISSM members, including joint APSSM, ESSM, ISSWSH, MESSM, SLAMS & SMSNA members will receive an 80% discount on the publication charge.
Authors are encouraged to submit articles to Sexual Medicine for several reasons. Like all articles submitted to The Journal of Sexual Medicine, papers submitted to the new journal will undergo strict peer review. Articles are published within weeks of acceptance. Authors retain the copyright to their articles, which are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial license. Also, all articles are deposited into PubMed upon publication.
In some cases, articles that are not accepted by The Journal of Sexual Medicine’s editorial board may be referred to the editors of Sexual Medicine.
Sexual Medicine is open for submissions. It can be accessed via the Wiley Online Library at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)2050-1161
