Women with vaginismus experience pelvic muscle spasms at the start of penetration. These involuntary spasms can almost closes the vagina. Penetration, or attempts at penetration, are painful. Many times, vaginismus makes intercourse impossible.
Vaginismus may stem from past sexual abuse or trauma, fear of sex, or problems in a woman’s relationship. It can usually be treated with counseling and sex therapy that teaches relaxation of pelvic muscles.
