How common is circumcision around the world?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves removing the foreskin of the penis, either partially or completely.

The practice is more common in some areas of the world than others.

  • According to the World Health Organization, circumcision is most common in North Africa, West Africa, and the Middle East. In these areas, more than 80% of men and boys are circumcised. Malaysia, the Philippines, and South Korea also have high circumcision rates.
  • In Australia and North America, circumcision rates fall between 20% and 80%.
  • In most of Asia, Europe, Central America, and South America, circumcision is less common, with prevalence rates below 20%.

Rates may vary within different countries among various ethnic groups.
