Some people claim that men can increase their penis size through a stretching exercise called jelqing.
In general, the practice is not considered effective and may even be harmful.

Jelqing techniques can vary, but in general, a man starts when his penis is almost erect. Next, he forms a ring with his thumb and index finger and wraps it around the base of his penis. He moves this ring up his penile shaft to the tip, using pressure to stretch the penis. This procedure is repeated several times. Some men jelq for up to 20 minutes.
Sometimes, jelqing is referred to as “milking” the penis.

Jelqing is thought to increase penis size in two ways:
- Allowing more blood to flow into the penis for a bigger erection.
- Creating “microtears” in the penis that heal with the growth of new cells, which make the penis bigger.
These rationales have not been scientifically proven. “Although this technique appears safer than other methods [of penile enlargement], there’s no scientific proof it works, and it can lead to scar formation, pain and disfigurement,” the Mayo Clinic states.

One consequence of jelqing is a higher risk for Peyronie’s disease. This condition causes hardened areas called plaques to form on the penis. Eventually, the penis starts to bend. In some cases, the curve is so great that intercourse becomes difficult or impossible.
Some men with Peyronie’s disease experience pain and develop erectile dysfunction (ED).

It’s common for men to be anxious about their penis size. Many men feel that the size of their penis represents their masculinity and virility. But in many cases, men who think their penis is too small actually have a normal-sized penis.
A doctor or therapist can help men better understand the range of normal penis sizes. Procedures to increase penis size can have serious complications, including infections, sexual dysfunction, and penile deformity.
