of the World. A single pyramid
is built of 2,300,000 blocks, each
weighing an average of two and
one-half tons. The Cheops Pyramid
is especially interesting since its interior
burial chambers are open for inspection by
the public. Not far from the Pyramids you will visit
the Great Sphinx of Giza, which dates from the
time of Chephren (2620 BC). Hewn from natural
yellowish limestone & standing 65 feet high & 187

Coptic Cairo
Before Egypt became an Islamic state, it was a
mostly Christian country with an ancient Christian
heritage. It was a land where Jesus and his family
were known to have traveled, and where early
Apostles came to spread his word, particularly at
fi rst in Alexandria. Most of the ancient Christian
churches of Egypt are located in Old or also called
Coptic Cairo.
The Citadel and The Mohammad Ali Mosque
The Mohammad Ali (Alabaster)
Mosque in the Citadel was designed
by Yussuf Bushnaq. The mosque is
the Tomb of Mohammad Ali and is
also known as the Alabaster Mosque because of
the extensive use of this fi ne material from Beni
Suef. From the arcaded courtyard, visitors have a
magnifi cent view across the city to the pyramids
in Giza.
Bazaars
The Khan El Khalili Bazaars, once
known as the Turkish bazaar during
the Ottoman period, is now usually
just called the ‘Khan’. Named for
the great Caravansary, the market
was built in 1382 by the Emir Djaharks
El-Khalili in the heart of the Fatimid City. On
a narrow street leading off al-Badistand, you will
fi nd the El-Fishawi Cafe or the Cafe of Mirrors,
which was once a meeting place for local artists.
Memphis & Sakkara
Memphis served as the capital of
Upper and Lower Egypt some 5,000
years ago during the 1st Dynasty.
The fraction we can see of Memphis
today is located principally around
the small village of Mit Rahina. The
remains of the god’s temple bordering the village
of Mit Rahina were at one time probably one of
the grandest temples in Egypt.
Sakkara is best known for the Step Pyramid, the oldest
known of Egypt’s 97 pyramids. It was built for
King Djoser of the 3rd Dynasty to be as grand as
it was unique and revolutionary. Mothep, the Pyramids
Engineer, was the fi rst to build stone tombs
in honor of the king’s majesty
