ED session in the 20th annual conference of the Egyptian Medical Association

ED session in the 20th annual conference of the Egyptian Medical Association
Dermatology and Veneriology Section (ESDV)
in Association with the Egyptian Society of Andrology (ESA)

In a spirit of cooperation, demonstrating a rising interest in the area of Sexual Medicine, the ESDV invited the ESA to host two sessions in its 20th annual meeting (September 23-26) in Cairo, one session was dedicated to recent research in the area of Erectile Dysfunction in Egyptian institutions, while a second session was dedicated to Male Infertility. A plenary lecture was also given by Prof. Bahgat Metawie about advance in oral therapy for ED. More than six hundred physicians attended the meeting that was organized by Prof. Moustafa Abu Zaid and Prof. Attia Attia.

In the ED session, Prof. Moustafa Aiada -Suez Canal University- gave an excellent and detailed talk about the prevalence, etiology and management lines for female sexual dysfunction, a field that needs a lot of research in Egypt. Dr. Ayman Khafagi -El Azhar University- discussed the interpretation of penile duplex data and how to avoid the pitfalls in the diagnosis. This is a hot topic where many workers in Egypt feel that false positive results are quite common - particularly when diagnosing venous-occlusion dysfunction - and might be damaging to a patient?s morale.

Dr. Abd El Rahman El Nashar -Cairo University- discussed the use of intracavernous drug combinations, while Dr. Hamed Hamed ?Cairo University- discussed the use of several transurethral drug combinations in the treatment of Erectile dysfunction. Interestingly Dr. Nashar claimed good results with sodium nitroprosside. Dr. Ihab Ismail presented his work regarding the use of Ultrasound in detecting subclinical penile fibrosis in patients on an intracavernous self-injection program. Ultrasound was found to be valuable in the early detection of fibrous plaques.

Prof. Hussein Ghanem presented the work conducted with Dr. Heba Darwish on her Master's degree thesis "Risk of CAD in patients with vascular ED". The most significant finding in this study was that 50% (11/22) of patients with a peak systolic velocity in the cavernous arteries of less than 25 cm /s had findings of CAD on the treadmill test, while none of 16 patients with a peak systolic velocity of more than 35 cm /s had such findings.

Prof. Abdallah Attia, Menoufia University, Prof. Ahmed El Karaksi and Prof. Ibrahim Fahmy, Cairo University, chaired the ED session.
