Sexual Health Q&A

Why might a man have surgery on his penis?

Penile cancer. In early stages of penile cancer, surgeons may remove only the tumor from the penis. In later stages, part or all of the penis may be removed in a procedure called a penectomy.

Erectile dysfunction (ED). Vascular surgery repairs blood vessels in the penis to improve blood flow during erection. Penile prostheses (malleable rods or inflatable devices) can be implanted surgically.

Peyronie’s disease (PD). This condition causes the penis to curve because of plaques (areas of hardened scar tissue). Surgeons can straighten the penis by stitching the opposite side of the plaque or cutting into the plaque and using a graft.
