Sexual Health Q&A

What causes lichen sclerosus?

Experts aren’t sure what causes lichen sclerosus, a rare skin condition that causes itchy white patches to form on the genitals and other parts of the body. One theory is that lichen sclerosus is an autoimmune disorder, in which a person’s own immune system attacks cells in the body, leading to inflammation. It’s also possible that a hormonal imbalance could be involved.

It’s important to know that lichen sclerosus is not contagious and cannot be passed between sex partners.
