Report on SASSM School Bangladesh by President SASSM
September 25, 2017
A three-day course of the 'SASSM School, Bangladesh’ has been conducted on September 23-25, 2017 at the Dhaka club. Most of the participants were joint SASSM-ISSM member. However, non-members were also accepted with an intention of raising SASSM-ISSM membership. The number of participants was 64; out of them, 20- psychiatrists, 16- skin & VD specialists, 12- urologists, 12- endocrinologists and 04 were gynecologists. Most of them were mid-level or senior specialists in their respective field and the enthusiasm was huge among them from the start to end.
We are thankful to the foreign faculties; President Elect of SASSM Dr Lasantha Malavige (Sri Lanka), Sec Gen Dr. Vasan SS (India), Prof TSS Rao (India), Prof. Venkata Ramana (India) for their contribution. Local faculties were Prof. M A Salam, Prof Md Golam Rabbani, Prof. Rowshan Ara Begum, Prof. Jahangir Kabir, Treasurer of SASSM Dr. Mohammad Shamsul Ahsan, and myself.
In the background of social taboos and the lack of evidence based practice by some doctors, we felt the necessity of appropriate knowledge and skill in the field of sexual medicine. The enthusiasm seen among the participants (over 600) in 2nd Biennial SASSM meeting at Dhaka in Dec 2015 was eye opening for us. It had driven us to plan for setting a school which should cover the bio psycho social aspects of sexual medicine. Eventually, we started the school named- ‘SASSM School, Bangladesh’. Both the faculties and the participants have shown keen interest and played active role. With this course we do hope to spread the activities of SASSM in this region.
The program was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), the only state run medical university of the country. He expressed interest in starting a multidisciplinary clinic or academic course on Sexual Medicine in the University.
We received feedbacks from the participants; most of them highly rated the course. A senior dermatologist mentioned; “I have been practicing sexual medicine for 20 years. I learned a lot from the course. Sexual Medicine is a multidisciplinary subject where we need to learn a lot from different discipline...... ”. A senior endocrinologist said; “I am fascinated and overwhelmed by the sessions
from day one till end by the learned Faculties from both home and abroad. I attended all the sessions. It was very informative and eye opener for me. But some hands on training like how to give sex therapy or video of practical procedures can be added to the program”. It may be mentioned that a good number of SASSM-ISSM members from Bangladesh have registered in the 3rd Biennial Meeting of SASSM at Colombo, Sri Lanka. Most of them are the school attendees. We are thankful to the organizers of SASSM2017 Meeting for arranging special sessions targeting the school attendees, which will include instructional courses; video based surgical master class and also workshop on sex therapy.
The course will be run annually. We have future expectations to enroll more participants including from neighboring SASSM countries in coming years. One of the objectives of SASSM is to disseminate ethical and evidence based practice in Sexual medicine. In achieving this goal, we had already conducted five half day symposia, named as ‘SASSM Symposia’ in different divisional cities of Bangladesh in last two years. We intend to continue the same in addition to the annual course of SASSM School, Bangladesh.
